Merikin Community Heritage Experience

8 Hours

Overview

Walk in the Footsteps of the Merikins: A Living Heritage Experience

Discover one of Trinidad & Tobago’s most remarkable and lesser-known cultural stories on this immersive journey into the heart of the Merikin community. Descendants of formerly enslaved African Americans and ex-soldiers of the British Colonial Marines, the Merikins established six historic villages in south Trinidad during the early 19th century and have preserved their traditions, customs and identity for generations.

This full-day cultural experience offers a rare opportunity to connect directly with community members, explore sites of historical significance and gain insight into a living heritage that continues to shape Trinidad’s diverse cultural landscape. Through storytelling, traditional practices, local cuisine and meaningful community interaction, you’ll experience a side of Trinidad rarely encountered by mainstream tourism.

More than a tour, this is a journey into resilience, identity and cultural preservation.
